At this year’s kick-off to the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta 2024, over 110 boats registered to take part in this event that is known far beyond the Caribbean. From two committee boats, each overseeing 5-7 classes, a total of 23 energetic races were started at this prestigious event.
We weren’t just there to report on it for you, we even gave the starting signal for a race from the starter boat B and joined the racing team on board VO65 “Sisi”. This is as close as it gets!

From Humble Beginnings to a Sailing Powerhouse: The St. Maarten Heineken Regatta’s Journey
The St. Maarten Heineken Regatta’s story began in 1980, a modest affair with just 12 sailboats taking part under the name “St. Maarten Regatta.” A pivotal moment arrived in 1983 when Heineken became the main sponsor, injecting its name and a significant investment to propel the event forward. To add to the excitement, competitors were even treated to refreshing Heineken beers delivered by a passing motorboat during races.
This sponsorship proved to be a turning point, fueling impressive growth. By 1990, the event had expanded to a three-day format. The number of participating boats skyrocketed, reaching 187 in 1995 and an astounding 251 in 1999. 2008 saw the peak with a record-breaking 284 boats, solidifying the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta’s position as a leading sailing event.
