Welcome back to our “Restaurant of the Week” blog series. As you already know, during the season we introduce you to highly recommended restaurants on St. Martin / St. Maarten and give you all the insider information about the menu, the service and the owners.
This week’s highlight is the impressive Vesna Taverna restaurant on Airport Road at La Palapa Marina, north of the Simpson Bay drawbridge. It offers delicious French and American cuisine – as well as authentic Greek dishes on Saturday evenings.
About the team
Vesna and Yannick met in 1998 at the renowned Fish Pot Restaurant in Grand Case on St. Martin. Yannick is French and has been working as a restaurateur since 1994, Vesna is Greek and Macedonian, loves to cook and has also been working as a restaurateur since 1998. Both have been trained by leading chefs around the world and spent several weeks at the renowned Atelier Guy Martin in Paris in 2013.
Vesna Taverna is run with a lot of love and dedication. Yannick is the creative force behind the menu and conjures up delicious dishes with passion. Vesna creates a feel-good atmosphere in the restaurant with her warm manner and attentive service. The team is small but mighty and works hand in hand to offer guests an unforgettable culinary experience. They love what they do, preparing great food for friends – new and old.
About the kitchen
The cuisine at Vesna Taverna is characterized by Mediterranean influences, which are skilfully complemented by Vesna’s Macedonian-Greek roots and Yannick´s French influence. Fresh, seasonal ingredients form the basis for the varied dishes on the menu. Whether starters, salads, pasta, meat dishes, or desserts – there is something for every taste. In addition to the regular dishes, Vesna Taverna is always creating new specials that underline her creativity and love of experimentation.
Friday night
Even though there are deliciously matured steaks and fresh salmon fillets every day … On Friday evenings you will be presented with fresh salmon fillets flown in from Nova Scotia as well as the famous and specially matured cowboy steaks.
Moules Marinieues are also served on Fridays – the sweetest and most delicious mussels imaginable. If you don’t want to indulge in these, you can of course also choose from the regular menu …
The Greek night
Vesna cooks Greek food all day on Saturdays. A real treat, because there are Greek metzes (also called mezes), for example. These are small but very delicious starters. They are available with meat as well as in vegetarian versions. A variety of main courses skilfully round off the Greek menu and, of course, there is no shortage of traditional Greek pastries on Saturdays … So let yourself be surprised.
It is all about the taste and presentation
The dishes at Vesna Taverna are a feast for the eyes and the palate. The flavors are perfectly balanced, the ingredients perfectly cooked and the portions more than sufficient. But most importantly, Vesna attaches great importance to the presentation of her dishes and therefore ensures that every dish is a small work of art.
