Oct 5, 2026 | 0 comments

Philipsburg, St. Maarten is getting ready to welcome another giant of the cruise industry. Royal Caribbean’s Hero of the Seas, the fourth ship in the Icon Class, is scheduled to make its first visit to St. Maarten on August 24, 2027.

And this one is big.

Hero of The Seas Philipsburg

After more than ten years of living on the island and watching countless cruise ships arrive and depart from Philipsburg, we are still fascinated by what the cruise industry keeps putting on the water. Hero of the Seas takes the concept of a cruise ship even further, combining a resort, water park, entertainment complex and dozens of restaurants and bars in one enormous floating destination.

Royal Caribbean officially describes Hero as the newest evolution of its Icon Class, with nine pools, 28 dining venues, eight neighborhoods and a host of new family experiences.

The numbers behind Hero of the Seas

Here is what makes this ship so impressive:

  • 364 metres / 1,196 feet long
  • 248,663 GT
  • 20 decks
  • 18 guest decks
  • 2,350 international crew members
  • Approximately 5,624 guests at maximum capacity
  • 22 knots maximum speed
  • Built at Meyer Turku in Finland
  • Maiden voyage: August 11, 2027 from Miami

Royal Caribbean’s current deck-plan information confirms the 248,663 GT tonnage, 1,196-foot length, 20 decks, 2,350 crew and maximum guest figure of 5,624.

That puts Hero of the Seas firmly among the largest cruise ships in the world.

More than a cruise ship

Calling Hero of the Seas a cruise ship almost feels like underselling it.

The ship is divided into eight neighborhoods, each designed around a different experience. There are spaces for families, thrill seekers, food lovers and guests looking for a quieter escape.

There are nine pools, new water slides and the first funnel raft slide at sea. Guests can also find the FlowRider, Crown’s Edge, rock climbing, mini golf, laser tag, an AquaTheater, the Royal Escape Room and Absolute Zero, Royal Caribbean’s ice arena.

And then there is the new Ultimate Family Treehouse.

This three-level accommodation is designed specifically for multigenerational families and includes two main bedrooms, private bathrooms and balconies, a rooftop terrace with a whirlpool and a dedicated two-story teen space.

28 dining venues

Food is another major part of the Hero experience.

Royal Caribbean has announced a record 28 dining venues, ranging from casual complimentary restaurants to specialty dining.

Guests can expect favorites such as Giovanni’s Italian Kitchen, Izumi, Chops Grille and Hooked Seafood, alongside new concepts including the Orleans Parish Supper Club, inspired by New Orleans.

There is also an impressive selection of bars and lounges, including Dueling Pianos, the English Pub, Schooner Bar and the new Hideaway Swim-Up Bar.

For a ship carrying thousands of guests, the sheer variety is remarkable.

When will Hero of the Seas visit St. Maarten?

This is the part we are particularly interested in.

The first scheduled visit to Philipsburg is August 24, 2027.

The current itinerary shows Hero leaving Miami on August 21 at 4:30 PM, spending two days at sea and arriving in Philipsburg on August 24 at 8:00 AM, with departure scheduled for 5:00 PM. The itinerary then continues to St. Thomas and Perfect Day at CocoCay before returning to Miami.

A second St. Maarten call is already scheduled for August 31, 2027.

So this is not looking like a one-off visit. Hero of the Seas is becoming part of Royal Caribbean’s Eastern Caribbean program, with St. Maarten firmly on the itinerary.

What does this mean for a day in St. Maarten?

For passengers arriving at 8 AM and leaving at 5 PM, there is plenty of time to discover the island.

And this is where we believe a cruise day in St. Maarten can become much more than a few hours in Philipsburg.

You can explore both sides of the island, visit Marigot and Grand Case, see the famous planes at Maho Beach, meet our famous iguanas, discover beautiful beaches and still make it back to the ship on time.

If you are visiting St. Maarten aboard Hero of the Seas, you don’t have to choose between the Dutch and French sides of the island. You can experience both.

The August 24, 2027 call may still seem a long way away, but cruise excursions can fill up early, particularly when several major ships are in port on the same day.
