Fascinating new banknotes with maritime masterpieces

Money makes you happy … at least if you look closer at the new Caribbean guilder!

But let’s start at the beginning: Curacao and Sint Maarten are facing a significant change: the Caribbean guilder (CMg) will become the new currency, replacing the previous one, the Antillean guilder, at a ratio of 1:1. The introduction is planned for March 31, 2025. The changeover is intended to strengthen the regional economy and ensure more stability.

What makes Caribbean guilders stand out, however, are the lovingly and artistically designed banknotes. Each design is a tribute to the region’s maritime diversity, with detailed depictions of coral reefs, fish, and elegant sea turtles. They do turn the banknotes into true works of art.

The exchange rate (as of September 8, 2024: 1 USD = 1.79 CMg (fixed); 1 EUR = 1.9864 CMg; 1 CMg = 0.50343 EUR) is pegged to the US dollar. This is intended to ensure stability and avoid complicated money exchange rates for travelers and locals alike.

With banknotes already designed this way, it may be worth considering not issuing them at all! Ultimately, this circumstance can also make people happy. Even if the title of this article was intended to refer purely to the motifs that evoke a real Caribbean feeling …

What do you think? Do you like the new banknotes as much as we do? Let us know in the comments …
