The boulevard will become a pedestrian zone to make way for the stalls of local artisans offering jewelry, clothing, decorations, but also specialties from Saint-Martin. Every Tuesday from 18:00 to 22:00, you can also enjoy the most diverse and colorful parades as well as a variety of musical performances..
What exactly is the Les Mardis de Grand Case?
Mardi Gras comes from the French and translates as “Fat Tuesday”, alluding to the colorful life and good food before Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent. The 21st ‘Mardis de Grand Case’ transforms the former fishing village of the same name into a festival of color, music and Caribbean joie de vivre every Tuesday.
Originally created to promote local merchants, it has developed into an artistic and culinary meeting place in Saint Martin. As a result, it is eagerly awaited every year by locals and tourists alike. At 6 p.m., the Boulevard de Grand Case pedestrian zone will be transformed into an absolute party mile. Allowing you to experience a world of parades, art exhibitions and taste explosions for the next 10 weeks!
The carnival parades are an essential part of Tuesday evenings in Grand Case. Dancers twirl around the spectators. Always in a mix of sequins and feathers to the rhythms of steel drums and typical Caribbean sounds. The event has a different theme every year, for which the dance groups rehearse new dances. Singing performances by impressive young voices also transport visitors to another world.
The art stands
The craft stands are another indispensable part of this event. Once again this year, local artists present their work to the public. Visitors can stroll along the more than 100 different stalls and discover many unique handmade creations. For example, jewelry made from natural materials found on the island, impressive items of clothing and handmade accessories. Painters present their most beautiful and colorful works; Caribbean decorative items and selected natural cosmetics will also be found.
Culinary experiences
The ‘Mardis de Grand Case’ would not be complete without its culinary offerings. Already known as the ‘gourmet capital of the Caribbean’ thanks to its various restaurants along the boulevard, there is even more on offer at this event. The fragrant stalls invite you to discover the flavors of the Caribbean. Countless Lolo’s, open grill restaurants run by locals, are always a guarantee for great snacks and real culinary delights. Of course, you can also visit one of the many gourmet restaurants and experience the concentrated sophistication of French cuisine with a view of the hustle and bustle on the street. Afterwards, you must try a home-made rhum at the street stalls, as these are refined with various Caribbean flavors and thus offer a unique taste.
